Esk Valley started trading under the Esk Valley name in 1987,  having been an established wine company since the 1930's.

This boutique Hawkes Bay winery specialises in handcrafted premium red wines from Cabernet         Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc,  Malbec, Syrah and Pinot Noir grape varieties. These reds are supplemented with elegant whites produced from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Verdelho and Chenin Blanc grapes. This making an impressive range by anyone’s view.

The old church, which is the landmark of the Esk Valley, is the feature on the labels.

Esk Valley Estate is in the heart of the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand's North Island and lies in a commanding position overlooking the bay

Gordon Russell has been Esk Valley's winemaker since the 1993 vintage. His interest in wine began when living in Europe.

He returned to New Zealand in the mid-1980's when the new styles of wine for which New Zealand is now famous were beginning to emerge.

These new developments whetted Gordon's appetite and he joined the wine industry. In 1988, Gordon was promoted to Cellar Foreman at Villa Maria Estate under the guidance of Kym Milne M.W. and in 1990 Gordon joined Esk Valley as Assistant Winemaker before becoming Winemaker in 1993. Gordon takes an active role in wine promotions as a wine tutor.

To enable the making of premium red wines from individually selected vineyard parcels, and to facilitate hand plunging of the skins day and night, Esk's 70 year old small open concrete vats are used for        fermentation. This painstaking,  traditional method achieves wines of great colour, flavour and softness

This in direct contrast to most people’s perception of the New World wine industry being one of the most technically advanced in the world. Especially when you consider how excitedly the New Zealand industry has embraced the ‘stelvin’ or  screwcap enclosure.

The Esk Valley's wines are all from the Hawkes Bay region on the east coast of the North Island. Esk Valley Estate owns vineyards in the area and also sources fruit from dedicated grape growers.  Another aspect well practiced in the New World.

This is the oldest - and arguably finest - winegrowing region of New Zealand where high quality wine has been made for more than a century.

Esk Valley's terraced vineyard was the first of its kind in New Zealand.  This is where the renowned and coveted "The Terraces" wine originates
